A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is a unique code used to identify products in your store. Unlike a product name, which is written for customers, a SKU is designed to help you organise your inventory and identify products quickly.
For example, your customers might see Woodland Faceted Vase, while its SKU could be VAS-AUT-WOOD.
Using a consistent naming convention makes your products easier to manage. For example:
- VAS-AUT-WOOD-25 = Woodland Faceted Vase (25 cm)
- VAS-AUT-WOOD-35 = Woodland Faceted Vase (35 cm)
Because every SKU follows the same structure, you can immediately recognise the product type, collection and variation without needing to read the full product name.
Enable custom SKUs
Before assigning your own SKUs, you need to enable the feature.
- Open the Store plugin.
- Click Store settings.
- Select the Sorting and Stock tab.
- Enable Use custom SKUs.
- Click Save.
Assign a SKU to a product
- Open the Products tab to view your product list.
- Click the product you want to edit.
- Scroll down to the Weight panel.
- Locate the SKU field.
By default, each product is assigned a numeric SKU, such as 1737-4270-8019. You can replace it with your own SKU, for example VAS-AUT-WOOD, following a convention such as:
Product type + Season collection + Collection name
Once you have entered your SKU, click Save.
Viewing SKUs in orders
When a customer places an order, you can view the SKU by opening the Orders tab and selecting the order.
Displaying the SKU alongside the product helps you identify the exact item that was purchased. This is particularly useful if you sell multiple versions of the same product, such as different sizes or colours, or if several products have similar names. Rather than relying on the product title alone, you can use the SKU to quickly locate the correct item for packing, stock management or reordering.
